Preventing and Treating Cavities the Natural Way

Preventing and treating cavities doesn’t just have to be done at the dentist! There are non-intrusive ways to care for your teeth. I find the links provided below to be very helpful and informative.

My three year old daughter has a brown spot on two molars, which the dentist says is because she happens to have porous teeth with deep groves, so food gets stuck there easily. We are currently using tips from these resources, including adding powdered egg shells to her diet, along with cod liver oil and ghee to help heal them so that they don’t turn into cavities – I’ll keep you posted with what happens at her next dentist visit.

***July 2014 Update on my daughter’s dark spots (impending cavities) – 6 months ago I took my daughter to the dentist. She was 3 at the time. She had dark spots on some molars that were on their way to becoming cavities. (Due to some deep groves that some people genetically have. The hygienist told me that I really needed to get fluoride on her teeth. Of course, I didn’t. I did take action though. I reread things I had come across on healing cavities naturally. Then, I added more coconut oil to her diet, cod liver oil (put on toast with jelly) and ghee – i’d cook with it or put on toast. I also changed her toothpaste. We had been using Tom’s of Maine, but it’s not so natural. I switched to Happy Teeth Toothpaste. Went back to the dentist yesterday…. they were GONE!!!

For kids, I would use either of the Happy Teeth Toothpastes found under the baby tab.

My son had ten cavities at his first check up (age 4) we eat organically and avoid most sugar. I found a dentist that works with a more natural approach and he told me to give my son vitamin D and Vitamin K daily. I started doing this right away and in the last 2 years he has not had any new cavities and in his two front teeth (we did not have filled because they will fall out soon) the decay has not gotten any worse. No flouride and no amalagam in his mouth, just good food and good vitamins and flouride free toothpaste.

  2. It is true that cavities don’t have to be treated at dentist clinic only. There are safe and natural ways of preventing and treating tooth decay. This article mentions a book “Cure tooth decay” by Ramiel Nagel. This is an excellent book which takes the reader to a new world of revelation regarding oral health and clears certain misconceptions. The author of this book advocates the importance of proper nutrition as the key element in building strong teeth and making them resistant to cavities. It is the deficiency of important nutrients like fat soluble vitamins A, D, E K, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and other minerals that make teeth weak and cause decay over the period of time. Therefore one should follow the nutritional protocol given by the author in this book which ensures prevention and reversal of cavities. This post could not have come at a better time, I just brought my 3 year old back from the dentist today and the hygienist was pushing fluoride for a couple teeth she thought had “grey” spots. I do use Toms of Maine because I just hadn’t found anything better, looks like I’m switching to Poofy and soon!

    • yay! also do the coconut, ghee and cod liver oil!

      • Cinnamon says:

Yes, I will have to buy the ghee and cod liver oil, we do use coconut oil for cooking. I’m just trying the figure out how to get them in her food. She’s quite willful and the food fare tends to be simple, so while I hate to hide things, it seems the best way to get it all in. Does cod liver oil mix with juice, ha ha.

      • could try juice! I put it on toast with jelly and butter and Lila didn’t mind it. I didn’t tell her it was there! You can cook with the ghee too!

Hi, my 4 year old son has cavities in his two back molars (one in each) that I’ve been told are now in the root, which they are suggesting baby root canals. I had already gone to one dentist that started to fill them, but was unable to finish the work so I was referred to another dentist that will preform the root canals at the hospital under anesthesia. I should mention that he also has asthma, that being part of the reason for the anesthesia vs. other methods. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable and not just because of the cost… that we can not afford. I just bought and gave him his first dose of butter oil/fermented cod liver oil today, I try to feed him as much grass fed butter as possible and occasionally pack the teeth with coconut oil (need to do that more). In your opinion, is this reversible or am I fighting the inevitable? He also now has holes in the teeth where they previously drilled and were unable to finish. I know you can not make the decision for me, just looking for advice from someone who believes in natural healing… the dentist brushed off my mention of coconut oil. He hardly ever says they hurt, every now and then, and if he does its usually after something sweet.
